The networking project that most appealed to me was the Inventing Abstraction one by the Museum of Modern Art.
The diagram represents the connections between different artists that helped develop abstract art as a new technique (1910-1925). Each node represents a different artist and each edge represents their documented interactions with one another. The artists that are red are the ones with the most interactions.
The project allows users to interact in many different ways. You can click on the name of the artist and it will send you to a page about them. It will show just the interactions that are relevant to that artist as well as some general information about them like their works, birth and death dates, places worked, etc. You can also click on specific works and learn more about what it is named and how it was made with different aspects of abstraction. Additionally, for most of the artists in red it will also provide a brief description of how that artist specifically contributed to the development and embodiment of abstract art.
Allowing these interactions helps keep users engaged and learn more about abstract art and different artists’ stories and gives more context for what the interactions were (letters, going out for drinks, discussions, etc). Without these specifications provided by this additional user interaction, users would not be able to get this information as easily.
The network helped me understand more about abstract art. I didn’t really know that there were so many more artists than Pablo Picasso that participated in the development of abstract art. I also thought it was interesting to learn that abstract art can be applied to such a wide range of media. Aside from paintings and photographs there can also be abstract music and non narrative dance among other things.

I looked at this one but didn’t write about it. I really like how the website and data have a very unique aesthetic. There’s a lot of neat information on it and it feels like a museum. I couldn’t really figure out for myself what kinds of interactions the connecting lines represented. There’s a difference between a strong friendship, an inspiration despite never meeting and two people crossing paths at random. The fact that wasn’t clear to me, at least on first viewing, was a little frustrating. Despite that, I do think it’s very interesting and informative overall.
The website was really interesting when I was viewing it. The connections highlighted the different interactions between each artist was a really interesting find I liked how they made the website with the art aesthetic to add glam to the website but also make it related to the information they were providing about the artist.
When I looked at this website, I appreciated the visuals and how the message they were conveying was very clear. The website doesn’t overload you with information, but gives a little bit of everything so one can get a “good enough” picture, with an option to dive deeper. I like that you also appreciated that aspect of the project. Good work!
