For my ArcGIS map project, I chose the Center for Mathematics and Computing, Gould Library, James Hall, Anderson Hall, and the Language and Dining Center. These locations were chosen to create an interactive map, with detailed information available in the second link above that contains my spreadsheet. Creating this interactive map was both engaging and challenging. Outlining the buildings and incorporating certain effects posed difficulties. However, once I understood how to use the tools, the process became easier. The ability to represent our campus in a digital space was fun and provided valuable insights into the potential of web mapping for digital humanities work.
Web mapping, especially through platforms like ArcGIS Online, offers unique opportunities for DH work. Its interactive features allow for storytelling, making complex data accessible and engaging for a wide audience. From educational purposes to urban planning, web mapping can foster meaningful connections between data and people. ArcGIS’s capabilities are vast, allowing users to create visually appealing and informative maps. Despite my initial struggles, I found the platform to be powerful, offering many tools for customization.
I one hundred percent agree, I experienced the same initial challenges and learning curve with ArcGIS, but as you mentioned, once you become familiar with the tools and techniques, the process becomes more manageable. Further, I also agree that web mapping, especially through platforms like ArcGIS, indeed offer a myriad of opportunities for DH work.
Well done with the map that you have created! I really like the highlighted green dots you used to locate your 5 buildings. I also came across difficulties with ArcGIS’s toolkit but as I kept working, I got the hang of it. Being able to transform a map of our campus into an interactive and visually appealing map was fun to create. I was also able to see the potential of ArcGIS and web mapping in general being used for many different cases.
For some reason I cannot access your map, however, your point about web mapping fostering “meaningful connections between data and people” is so beautifully put. Visualizing data creates an intimate connection between data and who the data concerns, this is a very effective tool in order to give data a multi-dimesional purpose.
