The spots on campus I put on my campus map are Evans Hall, CMC, Gould Library, LDC, and Laird football stadium. I chose these places because I go to all of them on a weekly basis, but on different frequencies in order to show the difference in how often I visit the different spots. I used an image of sun to represent my visit frequency per week at each location. So, in the map the sun for Evans Hall is the biggest because I am there 7 days/week. On the other hand, the CMC has the smallest circle because I only go there 3 days/week. The CSV file data is listed here.
I enjoyed this lab assignment and think ArcGIS has a plethora of capabilities and can be used in different ways. One way is it’s a powerful tool for geospatial analysis and visualization. When the data gets more intricate, it is harder to extract meaningful insights, so ArcGIS technology is necessary. With it, I am able to go beyond the data and learn more about the numbers. The interface is very user-friendly, so it is easy to make and visualize. The only thing I had trouble figuring out was how to change it so each location had a different logo.
This map turned out great! the use of the sun as an icon, and it’s relative scale being used for time spent in a location works great- I did a similar thing with the heatmap tool. ArcGIS in general seems like it’s great for this kind of thing, and I agree with what you said about ease of visualization.
I really like that you chose a sun symbol for the shape to represent days per week you visited each location! The size difference between points and the choice to show days in terms of “suns” makes the meaning clearer. I also really like the basemap you chose; it definitely matches the color of the suns.
This was a very easy map to understand with just a glance. The suns pop out and are a good choice of symbol because it is clear what they indicate. The base map was a good choice because it clearly shows all the detail but there is not too much going on.
Jacob Ventura, great job on your campus map! I like how you used sun icons to illustrate visit frequencies in a smart way that is easy to understand. Your use of ArcGIS for geographic analysis demonstrates the powerful features of the program. It becomes easy to explore the intricate details of data, which improves understanding of difficult material. Nicely done!
Jacob, what a map you have created. I liked how you chose to label buildings on the map that you visit on a daily basis. I also appreciate the simplicity of the map. Furthermore, you did an excellent job demonstrating the frequency that you visit each building on the map. Overall I thought you did a very good job.
