Group members: Isaac Lund, Sam Merritt, Paul Jung, Arlo Cornell, Newton Pham
Topic and Objectives:
We are hoping to look at admissions data about where applicants, accepted students, and enrolled students are from at Carleton. Our project will largely depend on what data we are able to get from the admissions office but we hope to create a combination of ArcGIS maps and Flourish Bar graphs to display the data.
Sources:
Arlo has already emailed Art Rodriguez, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid about where applicants, accepted students, and enrolled students are from at Carleton.
Processes:
We are thinking of adding up the number of applications submitted from each state and country beginning with the earliest year data is available for. We might then compare this to the amount of accepted applications from each area. This would hopefully reveal which area’s students have the highest acceptance rates and which areas are turned away most frequently.
Presentation:
We are discussing making an animation of the number of students from each state/country going up over time superimposed over a map of the United States.
We will most likely make charts to display our findings, or maybe a timeline. Anything is possible!
A project that could serve as a good template is last year’s Alumni visualization project

Group Charter
Group Values:
Everyone works to create a project that is decent quality and be aware of the work others are doing so that it is evenly split. Don’t be a dick and actually contribute a reasonable amount.
I think we are all pretty open and agreeable people, so talking out any disagreements in class is a plausible solution. Also, our project is very objective and logic/data based, so I don’t think we would have too many quarrels surrounding artistic and quality choices.
Roles:
Acquiring Data: Arlo (contacting Art Rodriguez), Paul (I will contact Holly Buttrey)
Cleaning Data: Newton
Mapping: Isaac
Graphs: Sam
Timeline: tentative (might not happen)
Writing Blog/Updates:
- 1st Blog (Project Pitch and Charter) – Sam will post
- 2nd Blog (Project Update and Source Documentation) – Newton will post
Website Creation: Arlo (we’ll write up the parts in drive and arlo will add it to the website and make it pretty)
I like the idea of seeing where admitted and enrolled students at Carleton come from. I feel like including applicants in the pool is an ambitious move, since there’s a lot more data to work with there, with more potential for errors and data discrepancies, but I think pulling it off would be really cool. Good luck!
This seems like an interesting idea. I’m really curious about where the applications to Carleton are coming from. It feels like I know a lot of people from Minnesota, California, and Illinois (specifically Chicago). I wonder if that will be reflected when seeing the location data of where Carleton applicants are applying from.
I’m excited to see the final product of your guys’ work. My group will be similarly looking at admissions data except we won’t be concerned with the geographic locations of students. I wonder what types of patterns you’ll see in the data you find and if any areas have always been heavily accepted by Carleton.
This is a cool project. I am curious to see if there are many areas that have a lot of applicants but few people are accepted. I think creating an ArcGIS map and different bar graphs as well as a timeline is cool because the data can be presented differently and patterns may be easier to spot in one visualization method than the others.
This project looks really interesting! It does seem like a lot of data to go through so I wonder if you might choose to focus on a specific time frame like the last 10 years. I am excited to see if there is any correlation between the total number of applications in the state and the total number of those who got accepted. I wonder if states with a higher number of applications had more students accepted and vice versa.
I think it is very interesting that your group is choosing to focus on admissions data about where applicants, accepted students, and enrolled students are from at Carleton. I am very interested to see what your group finds from examining this data. One potential problem for this project might be that the school is unwilling to share admissions data. Regardless I am excited to see what your group’s final project looks like.
