Project Pitch and Group Charter (Modeling Old Carleton)

Our group comprises Aurelia Peterson Rajalingam, Jane Parson, and Breanna Lefevers-Scott. We have decided that we are going to create a 3D model of the old Goodsell Observatory, Willis Hall, or the 1855 Men’s Gymnasium that was never built. If time allows, we plan to superimpose it on a map of campus in the location where it was located or where it was supposed to be located. For data, we are attempting to find the old blueprints of the building through archives and facilities, along with old photographs and maps related to the building. Through this, we aim to create a semi-accurate recreation of the location with a 3D modeling tool such as photogrammetry or blender by extracting exact scales and material information to understand how the building looked. Suppose we choose to model the old Goodsell Observatory or the old Willis Hall. In that case, we hope to specifically create a scrollable 3D model illustrating changes to the buildings over time. If we choose the 1855 Gymnasium, we plan to develop a model of what the blueprints suggest that the building would look like. In addition to the model, we will also include a brief description of the history of our chosen building. One project we are taking inspiration from is the 3D model of Carleton Pool done in a previous iteration of this class.

We plan to communicate and work with each other and work on the project outside of the class using instant messages and emails. Our roles for the project include Jane handling the visualization and website stylization, Breanna taking on posting to the class WordPress and website setup, and Aurelia handling the outside communication and subdomain website content. We all plan to work together for the presentation. Otherwise, our goal is to have all five components of the project completed, with significant portions of the work being completed during class. To do so, we expect all group members to contribute equally to the project and finish their parts on time. As a group, we value consistent communication and timely completion of the project. Thus, we will communicate through a group chat and, when disagreements arise, through group discussions.

The tag that we decided on was DHARCHITECTURE, so look for more updates to our project under that tag.

  1. This project really stands out to me and I’m curious about a few things. Was the decision to choose the two currently existing buildings (out of all the ones on campus) due to shape complexing, interesting history, some other factor or even a combination of multiple factors. I’m also curious to see if Willis or the Observatory is chosen, how their original blueprints would differ from the current ones. Were major renovations done? You guys chose a super fun topic and I hope you enjoy working on it!

  2. I really this project’s idea. I wonder how you guys are going to render each building since the changes from time to time can not always be shown in pictures but, this idea seems really fun to do I hope to see the finished product of this pitch. Great work!

  3. This project is seems very interesting to me and curious to see how a 3D map of campus in the location where it was located or where it was supposed to be located ends up turning out (especially the gymnasium because 1855 is a very long time ago).

  5. This is a really great idea for a project! I’m especially excited for the gymnasium example, to see something that had been planned but never came to fruition. Recreating the gymnasium seems like it could be hard but I think that added challenge makes it evengreater. I also think the Tag you chose was quite clever, a portmanteau of DH and Archictecture.
