I think a georectified map would be useful for pointing out how a landscape has changed over time or how a map can have an obvious argument when superimposed on a landscape. What aspects of the land are emphasized in the map and why? I think the next steps would be to somehow orient the map in the context of the space surrounding it. The limitations could be that the maps weren’t super accurate––especially considering when they were made, it might be difficult to map it on to real space. Another problem might be controversial or problematic imagery on older maps that need to be contextualized or addressed. The context of the map informs what you can ultimately do with the map. It might not be a map that is fit for georectification because not all maps are necessarily concerned with geography. Even after pinning the arb map, mine didn’t line up perfectly at the bottom half. The river drawing doesn’t match up with the river on the map underneath. This might be because the map is primarily concerned with mapping out the arb and delineating the different types of terrain that you can find in the arb. It might be because it was made before google maps. Whatever the reason, the map is still used. I was given the map in an english class about nature and my roommate was gifted a pen drawing overlaying the map. This leads me to think that the map also has an aesthetic quality entirely separate from its functionality. Ultimately, you should approach historical maps with caution so as to see it for its many purposes besides simply navigation. This exercise did change how I saw the spatial DH projects from before. They integrated their information really well into the maps and made a lot of decisions to increase clarity. After this exercise I realize how difficult that can be.
