Week 6 Lab- Campus Map (KD Meraz)

I had a fun time making this map. I chose to map out the water fountains I drink out of frequently & how many water bottles they have filled (as of 10/19/23). So I went to each of them and took pictures and wrote down their location (room), coordinates, and number of bottles filled at that fountain.

I had a hard time doing the building footprints because the baseline map was outdated and didn’t have the current version of the Hulings/Anderson/Olin buildings. I chose to make each building outline a different color mostly so you can differentiate between Olin and Anderson. I also made the shape of my points kind of look like a water droplet so it could fit the theme better. Additionally, I changed the size range for the points so they look more proportional to one another and made their visible range smaller. I also added the pictures of each fountain in my CSV spreadsheet so it is an option to see the image in the pop-up (you have to click view, I couldn’t get it to just show up). 

I think web mapping has a lot of potential in DH because it allows people to create cool interactive maps that can show anything just for entertainment (like the squirrel map we saw earlier). It also allows people to learn specific things about different locations on a map. 

ArcGIS was a pretty helpful and beginner friendly way to learn to create this map. It was pretty easy to navigate and had a lot of options to create cool maps using different base maps and atlas layers.
