The data we used for this project was collected from different sources around campus, including Carleton Archives, The Carletonian, and the Perlman Museum. We made a spreadsheet that includes all the sculptures and art we are mapping from across campus. The data we are specifically looking at is the title, the art piece, date, description, location, material, owner of the art, and the credit line. To visualize this data, we made an ArcGIS map that describes each art piece and its location on campus. The ArcGIS map includes both explanatory and exploratory features. The map allows viewers to interact with the map by clicking on various sculptures. The pop-ups of each sculpture provide more information about the piece. This information is the data that we collected in the spreadsheet. For each sculpture, a PNG was created as an icon so each piece could stand out on the map. This makes each piece more identifiable for viewers who are interested in looking into a sculpture they have already seen before. The information within the pop-ups has been edited so they are not too crowded.
I was unable to embed the ArcGIS web app so here is a link to our web app for the sculptures on campus.
I think that this project is very cool, I love the map! I specifically like how you used a PNG of each art piece as the marker for its location, so the users are able to identify it more easily. I also like how you compressed the information from the spreadsheet so that it looks nice on the map! The idea of placing these art pieces on a map is very useful as users can then go and see the art pieces in person after taking a look at your project. Overall I think this is a very useful and well-thought-out data visualization.
I love seeing the different sculptures and their locations throughout campus. It is also nice to see each image of the sculpture on the map. I feel the data is organized very well and makes it easy to read and locate each sculpture. I am looking forward to your final project and seeing the final product of the map!
I like the idea that you guys have decided to display these sculptures and their location on campus. The data looks very organized and it was easy to connect the information from the spreadsheet to the sculptures. I would suggest that the sculptures have descriptions to describe what it represent or basic data on them. Great work!
Great job with your project! I’m really impressed with how you showcased the sculptures on campus, seamlessly blending information. The use of PNG markers was a thoughtful touch, making identification a breeze. The condensed spreadsheet data led to such a visually pleasing map. Adding sculpture descriptions would take it to the next level in user-friendliness. Well done!
This looks great! I am very impressed that you were able to get images cut out and pasted as each pin point on the map. The information is also very interesting. I didn’t realize just how many of the pieces are made by Carleton alumni. I also would’ve expected more artwork from various art classes on campus.
Wow, this is super cool! I like how the point on the map for each sculpture is a photo of that sculpture. This format makes it really easy to learn about all of the structures on campus, although I wish there was a way to view the sculpture better when selected. It seems like most of the statues are unrelated and come from different time periods, but it is still fascinating to learn about them nonetheless!
This is an awesome project! Even thought this art on campus is “public”, it is not the most accessible to everyone everyone. I really like how your project bridges that gap and allows anyone with internet access (and who wants to) to experience and learn more about the art on our campus!
