Component 3

All data is from the Carleton football statistics page: https://athletics.carleton.edu/sports/2019/7/13/carleton-football-statistics.aspx

The data was cleaned and filtered using Microsoft Excel. We also used Excel to create the visualizations. The visualizations are comparing the correlations between ten different statistics and the number of wins in the season in a scatter plot. The statistics of interest are points per game, opponent points per game, total offensive yards per game, opponent’s total offensive yards per game, penalties, time of possession, field goal attempts, forced turnovers, 3rd down conversion %, and defensive 3rd down conversion %. We created two styles for the visualizations. The 5 statistics with higher correlation are in blue with white data points, while the lower 5 are in dark gray with a yellow line and points. Both create clear and easy to understand visualizations.

  1. This is cool! It makes sense that a team that wins more will have more yards and forced turnovers per game. Do you think this data is useful for improving the team, or is it more about seeing trends from year to year? It seems like the main factor behind most of these graphs is the skill of Carleton’s team compared to other teams that year.
