For my ArcGIS map I decided to plot points at Burton, Gould Library, the CMC, Boliou and the Recreation Center. I choose these locations because they are the buildings that I am in the most often. The data I used for my ArcGIS map was this spreadsheet. I decided to use the streets basemap because the colors emphasized the important part of the map and it looked very clear. I decided to use red stars as my symbol because I thought it was a simple way of showing the number of times I visited a specific building. The bigger the star, the more times I visited the building (within a week). I know that it is hard to see the star for the recreation center because it is small and the logo of the recreation center is also blocking the view of the star. I used the Map Notes layer to outline each of the buildings that are prevalent to my map. Although the green color of the outline makes the buildings stand out really well. I really liked doing this lab assignment with ArcGIS. It was much easier to navigate after having some experience using it.
I think web mapping is very useful in many different ways. Web mapping allows for a unique but somewhat complex way of presenting data but also helps you understand the process of web mapping. Using ArcGIS isn’t the easiest when it is your first time, but learning how to use it will help you make different types of web maps.
ArcGIS has a lot of capabilities for different subjects. It is a unique and helpful site with different types of web maps to visualize data that isn’t necessarily a graph. I was introduced to ArcGIS in High School in my science class and used it to represent data that we collected. Although it is a different subject, we were still able to use it successfully and make something new. With the versatile tools, there is many different web apps that can be made.
Your reflection on the lab assignment with ArcGIS and web mapping is insightful. You highlight the initial learning curve when using ArcGIS but acknowledge that experience with the platform makes navigation easier. Your point about the versatility of web mapping and its utility for various subjects is essential. Web mapping offers a unique and somewhat complex way to present data, and your experience with it in your high school science class demonstrates its applicability across different fields. The versatile tools in ArcGIS and the range of web maps that can be created further emphasize its potential as a valuable tool for visualizing data beyond traditional graphs. You recognize the benefits and potential of web mapping and ArcGIS in diverse contexts.
I like the star shape you used to represent the locations you chose, It’s vibrant color draws your attention to it. I also like that you chose to make the outline of the buildings green, it makes them stand out from the rest of the buildings but doesn’t distract from the star. I think it’s cool that you were able to use this tool in High School for science purposes.
